A unique guide for trial lawyers, Images with Impact: Design and Use of Winning Trial Visuals has just been published by the American Bar Association. Praised as a "groundbreaking book," "essential reading for every trial lawyer," and a "must for the trial lawyer's library," the 300+ page book is packed with hundreds of full-color graphics and helps presenters turn case themes into visuals that the viewer will understand, believe, and remember. The book's author, Kerri Ruttenberg, is a partner in Jones Day's Business & Tort Litigation Practice, and based in its Washington Office.

It begins with a consideration of why visual communication is essential in today's courtrooms, then analyzes the relevant tools of visual courtroom communications and reviews the basics of graphic design to help lawyers create and improve their own visuals. The book offers a wide range of strategic considerations and tips, such as spotting misleading visuals, when to use low- vs. high-tech visuals, and even a review of state and federal law of demonstrative evidence.

"Kerri is not only well versed on this important and sometimes misused tool of trial lawyering, she also knows how to pass along this knowledge, which has benefited many of her colleagues in this Firm," said Stephanie Parker, coleader of Jones Day's Business & Tort Litigation Practice. "We congratulate her on the publication of this excellent guide, which belongs on the bookshelf of any litigator who likes to win."

Ms. Ruttenberg centers her national trial practice on criminal defense and parallel civil enforcement actions, representing clients in a broad spectrum of white-collar and complex cases. She also has extensive experience defending clients accused of violating the False Claims Act, including successfully first-chairing two FCA jury trials each involving multiple issues of first impression, winning significant victories at trial and in post-trial litigation. Recently, Ms. Ruttenberg successfully defended clients against the FTC in two separate antitrust merger challenges as part of the in-court trial team.
